My PhD project looks at how teen and young adult novels are translated from English into Indonesian, focusing on the social and cultural context. I study how sexual language is handled in both translated and original Indonesian novels for young readers. I choose the novels dealing specifically with sexual assault because they provide rich material for the purpose of this study. By interviewing Indonesian translators, editors, and authors, I explore how cultural norms, societal expectations, and collaboration shape the books published for teens. However, there is a twist: the readers' age range can be shifted depending on the (self-)censorship decisions by all the actors involved.
